Publisher's Description:

SimpleOCR - Convert your scanned images to text files or Word documents with SimpleOCR--the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) application that is completely free. SimpleOCR is also a royalty-free developer toolkit (aka SDK or API) that you may use to add OCR to your custom software application.

SimpleOCR features include TWAIN scanning, ability to manually specify text and image zones, English, French and Dutch dictionaries, interactive correction with suggestions from dictionary, output to plain text or RTF (MS Word) formats and more. It provides all of the most commonly used OCR features and competitive recognition rates for many types of documents. If you just need to convert a few documents to text to save retyping, SimpleOCR will save you hours of time without the $75-$700 cost.

Developers can use the SimpleOCR API to add OCR capabilities to their custom software. If your application deals with document images, SimpleOCR will let you add full-text searching or automate the indexing process with zone OCR. SimpleOCR SDK is royalty-free, so it won't increase the per-license cost of your software. You won't find that deal anywhere else!

A 15-day demo of Charactell's Softwriting handprint recognition engine is also included. Machine print recognition has no limitations or advertisements.

I am not able to use the api code for OCRing the tif image.

It abruptly terminates the application from line
"ret = objOCR.OCRX(img, 0)".

The program does not give any error. It exits abruptly

In the end, I did not download the software as I was looking for something from PDF to OCR, not just a graphics format to OCR.

This is a pretty decent OCR program for being free. However, I was only able to do 20 pages at a time, which is quite inconvenient when I have a whole batch of image files to OCR. I liked how I was able to walk through each page after the OCR process was completed to ensure it OCR'd correctly, but unfortunately it's not very practical or accurate for OCRing quickly. I would only recommend this product for small OCR jobs that you can dedicate a significant amount of time to in order to check for accuracy yourself.

I am very disappointed with the quality. With your product I would be better off retyping everything to begin with. I may have done something wrong but I don't know what.

My document was a VERY simple document in 11 pt courier new. I created it as a test, so it was OCR'd from a previously scanned 600dpi tiff file, with the original being a first generation laser print.

The results were essentially un-useable. It erred on every period that didn't have a space after it. It cut off the last half of far too many sentences, and put CRs in the most inappropriate places.

Office Document Imaging OCR'd the same document perfectly. I'm afraid there's a long way to go, at least when it comes to OCRing documents that weren't originally scanned with SimpleOCR.

Great Software!!!

I downloaded quite a few programs that said they would convert images to text. The only other one I found made me edit the "converted" text as the program itself did not do a good job.

This software converted 98% of the text and those parts I had to edit were understandable.

Dear Qa team,
after having regularly downoloaded and installed Simple OCR on my pc, I realized that there was no possibility to deal with Hungarian language. I tryed to upload the hungarian language library, as described in the instructions but I was not able to find it.
I tryed to use the software with english and it looks like working well.
I hope there is a possibility to deal also with hungarian and I will be glad to get any suggestion

Thankyou in advance
With best regards

Tassan Gianni

It doesn't support tif file formats despite offering the filter in the file open dialog. And the text matching engine is pretty poor. If you used this on crystal clear text (hi res dpi) and had a second level parser correct common misinterpreted words from the ocr (assuming they're consistent) then you could probably use it.

The user interface is difficult to understand and very tiresome and tedious to use - since one needs to go through the same rigmarole each time the program starts - choose this or that, click here or there.

It turns readable text image grabbed from the screen into close to complete gibberish.

It prompts you to confirm even the most evidently correct text strings - and there are quite few of these.

All in all baically a waste of time and effort to download it.

Maybe if you have very high definition scannings from documents it may work - yet only with 3 or 4 different languages.

Sorry!

Performance

The primary use was conversion of image-only PDF into text through OCR. SimpleOCR does not read pdf files, it only reads image format, preferrably .BMP. Some .TIF formats were not handled. The performance I had reading .BMP formats is fair but sufficient for what I need. If the quality of the image is good, then the results are acceptable. It is still a good value as it is free...

Robert.Martin Comments

I tested the program on images of pages extracted from PDF files. I got very poor results. I then tried the program a a couple of pages created by the Gutenberg project with equally poor results. At this point I do not find the program useful.

I wanted to used OCR of PDF page images. The program is not helpful in this endeavor.
